The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with its departments in Aachen and Wuppertal has approximately 1,800 students making it the largest music academy in Europe. In the year 2000, it celebrated its 75th anniversary. The well recognized reputation of the Academy is founded, above all, on its furthering of education in the field of classical music as well as its openness towards the development of contemporary music.

Since 1976 the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln has been housed in a functional building which has in addition to teaching and practice rooms, an organ concert room, a studio for electronic music, a chamber music hall seating 150 persons and a concert hall seating an audience of approximately 800. Situated in the historic part of the old city near the cathedral and the main train station, it follows that the Academy has a very stimulating environment influenced by the vitality of daily life.

A comprehensive programme of more than 300 concerts and presentations yearly has given the Academy its place in the local cultural scene and given the school a reputation in the region and beyond. Its attractivity is enhanced by symphony and chamber music concerts, vocal and opera performances, oratorio, dance and jazz performances where the admittance is free of charge. This offers the students of the Academy the opportunity to present their talents to the general public.

The Hochschule fur Musik Koln has contact with other music academies and conservatories throughout the world. International projects, the European Academy of Music and the Performing Arts Montepulciano, has three international music competitions (the Piano Competition – Tomassoni Foundation, the Violin Competition – Georg Kulenkampff Foundation, and the Singing Competition – Helga and Dr Paul Hohnen Fondation, who are all members of the renowned „Federation Mondiale des Councours Internationaux de Musique“), master classes, festivals and exchange concerts as well as financing foreign studies to help found and further contacts between teachers and students from various countries and institutions.

Students from over 50 nations study at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. They are instructed by more than 300 teachers and professors who guarantee that the considerable number of students meet the same exceptional measure of teaching quality.
