Arrival and accomodation

You can reach Montepulciano easily by train and car. It is also possible to travel by plane to the cities in the region. For your accommodation we work together with the agency Terre Toscane.

by train

Drive to Chiusi/Chianciano Terme (NOT to Montepulciano Stazione! This station is not connected to public transport and is 12 km from the centre). Please also note that not all ICs stop in Chiusi. In front of the station, blue LFI buses run more or less hourly to Montepulciano. The journey time is about 50 minutes. Timetable information can be obtained from our office or at: www.lfi.it. Tickets can be bought at the newsagent in the station or at the Tabacchi Italia bar in the station square (not always on the bus and only with an extra charge!). Price: approx. 3.40 euros. Get off at the Porta Farina stop at the centre of Montepulciano, after notifying the driver, and walk towards Piazza Grande. From there it is only a few steps to Palazzo Ricci (the road always goes uphill), or go to the terminus (Capolinea) and from there take the yellow city bus (tickets at the bus station) to Piazza Grande.

by car

Take the A1 motorway in the direction of Rome. About 100 km after Florence, take the Valdichiana exit and follow the signs for Montepulciano. Two kilometres after the town of Torrita di Siena, at a fork in the road, the road leads both straight ahead and to the right to Montepulciano: take the shorter road signposted to the right (not via Nottola/Montepulciano Stazione). The old town of Montepulciano is closed to public traffic. Please park your car in one of the car parks on the outskirts of the town and register at the Palazzo office. There you will receive information on how to bring your luggage to the flats and unload it. Car travellers from Rome: please use the Chiusi/Chianciano Terme exit and follow the signs to Montepulciano. Lecturers are kindly requested to contact us before their arrival to check-in at the hotel or flat.

by plane to Florence, Rome, Pisa, Bologna

We recommend Florence, Bologna, Rome or Pisa airports. Please allow sufficient time for the onward journey by train and bus to Montepulciano and book flights for this purpose, landing in Italy by early afternoon at the latest.

Bologna: From Bologna's Guglielmo Marconi airport, take the bus shuttle to the main train station and take the train (direction Rome/Naples) via Florence to Chiusi/Chianciano Terme.

Florence: From Florence airport Peretola/Amerigo Vespucci by bus or taxi to the main railway station. Santa Maria Novella (S.M.N.) and by train to Chiusi Chianciano/Terme (direction Naples/Rome).

Pisa: From Pisa airport Galielo Galilei by train or bus to Florence and as above by train to Chiusi/Chianciano Terme (direction Naples/Rome).

Rome: From the Roman airports Rome/Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) and Rome/Ciampino by shuttle train or bus to the main station. Termini and by train to Chiusi/Chianciano Terme (direction Milan/Florence).

During your arrival, the easiest and cheapest way to reach us is by SMS on your Academy mobile phone with the number +49 175 2433 585. Please also keep your mobile phone ready for messages. You will be expected at the Terre Toscane agency, Via del Poliziano 52, on the day of arrival.

You will be accompanied from there to your accommodation and given a map of the city and the room keys. On the day of departure, the accommodation must be vacated by 10.00 am.

Tourism levy for the municipality of Montepulciano

Since 1 February 2012, the municipality of Montepulciano has been levying a tourism tax, thus implementing resolution no. 91 of the municipal council. The funds collected thanks to this levy are used to promote and finance cultural events and initiatives for the citizens of Montepulciano, as well as to develop the tourism infrastructure. The municipal administration and the businesses concerned pursue these goals together, and visitors should also consider the tourism levy not simply as a tax, but as a contribution to the area.
The levy is charged on all overnight stays by people who are not residents of Montepulciano. The levy is €1.00 per person per day.
